When you talk to Joanna Burris, you quickly notice two things: her enthusiasm for her role as Sustainability Planner for the Municipality of Colchester, Nova Scotia; and how often the word ‘capacity’ surfaces in the conversation.
Transportation is the backbone of our daily lives, connecting people to their jobs, schools, and essential services. However, it’s also one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
While the City has worked with the public and stakeholders on climate issues before, this event marked the first time it focused specifically on the non-profit community. And there’s already talk of making it a regular event in the future, with new goals or participants each time.
Without practical frameworks co-developed alongside rural communities, how can policies better accommodate and support the co-creation of just energy transition frameworks that empower communities and drive meaningful action?
“To use a hockey analogy, I guess you could say that MCCAC has been the coach of this process, and QUEST has been the General Manager,” says Ronak Patel, MCCAC’s Program Manager for Capacity Building.
