Investment Tax Credit for Clean Technologies: An Open Letter to Minister Chrystia Freeland

Protecting the Diverse Needs of Canadian Communities in the Investment Tax Credit for Clean Technologies: An Open Letter to the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance

The Government of Canada has proposed an investment tax credit of up to 30% for investments in clean technologies via the Investment Tax Credit for Clean Technologies (ITCs). Though this is a step in the right direction, the 2022 Fall Economic Statement only identifies four thematic areas that a refundable tax credit would apply, namely (1) Electricity Generation Systems, (2) Stationary Electricity Storage Systems, (3) Low-Carbon Heat Equipment, and (4) Industrial zero-emission vehicles and related equipment.

Though this action is commendable, the Government must introduce ITCs that apply to the broadest suite of technologies available today that reduce GHG emissions. The thematic areas identified exclude several technology categories that are commercially available and poised to reduce GHGs in communities with the appropriate support.
