Approaches to Climate Resilience in Rural, Remote, Northern, and Indigenous Communities

October 14 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm EDT

Approaches to Climate Resilience in Rural, Remote, Northern, and Indigenous Communities
Approaches to Climate Resilience in Rural, Remote, Northern, and Indigenous Communities

Innovation Exchange 1 – Program

Communities across Canada are already faced with climate change impacts, and wrestle with the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, flooding, ice storms, heat waves, forest fires, permafrost melt, and more. Costs associated with damages to property and infrastructure, public health, as well as emergency response efforts, are rising annually. UN’s global disaster statistics show that smaller communities with more frequent events are the most vulnerable and disproportionately affected worldwide.

This Innovation Exchange is aimed at representatives of rural, remote, northern, and indigenous communities, who are interested in approaches to climate adaptation and community resilience. The session will feature three presentations, peer-to-peer learning, and a discussion period. The three presentations include:

QUEST Canada, who will share approaches to build climate resilience at the local level, including key resources, tools, and examples from their climate adaptation work with over 16 communities across Canada
Tamarack Institute, who will share methods for community engagement in climate adaptation, ensuring Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
CIER (Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources) and Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation on building community engagement in climate change adaptation planning and action initiatives.
