QUEST Canada refers to these communities as Smart Energy Communities. NB Power can also use this platform to make the power grid more efficient, greener and less expensive, for everyone\u2019s benefit. The ESP will become a new product that utilities around the world can use to help manage the significant complexities of integrating customer-owned technologies such as solar panels and batteries \u2013 known as distributed energy resources (DERs) \u2013 onto local neighbourhood grids.<\/p>\n<p>Smart Grid Atlantic\u00a0includes smart energy community projects in both provinces that will deploy and test smart energy technologies to learn how they impact our provincial power grids and how they can benefit customers in the future. Each community is unique, and each project has different technologies and research objectives.\u00a0 The projects currently underway are:<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-3\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; width=&#8221;70%&#8221; max_width=&#8221;70%&#8221; module_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||21px|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shediac, NB \u2013 The Shediac Smart Energy Community Project<\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;15px&#8221; width=&#8221;70%&#8221; module_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;1px||0px||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;|3px|36px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>This project has three main pieces:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.A Residential Smart Energy Study<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re partnering with hundreds of homeowners in Shediac to deploy and test new smart energy technologies and renewable energy sources. We want to identify opportunities for energy savings in these homes, to learn from the customer experiences and behaviours in using these technologies and how these are affecting their energy use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>A Community Solar Farm<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re going to build NB Power\u2019s first utility-scale solar facility \u2014a 1.63 megawatt (MW) solar farm with utility battery storage capacity \u2014 right inside the town limits of Shediac. Convert Two Commercial Buildings to Net-Zero<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re introducing new smart-energy technologies (including solar panels and battery storage) and energy efficiency upgrades into two well-known commercial buildings \u2014 the Government of Canada Pension Centre and the Town of Shediac\u2019s Multipurpose Centre. The goal is to lower the buildings\u2019 energy use, while also adding clean energy sources to provide a new level of self-sufficiency. To achieve a net-zero rating, the buildings will also take advantage of renewable energy generated by the new solar farm. A neighbourhood of net-zero-ready homes will be built over the next few years for interested homebuyers. These highly efficient homes will include smart home energy technologies, such as home energy management systems, rooftop solar and smart energy storage batteries. Each home will be able to function independently as a \u2018nanogrid\u2019 and will also be part of a \u2018microgrid\u2019, where all homes involved in the project are connected and can share the energy they generate with their neighbours as part of a neighbourhood energy exchange program.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-3\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; width=&#8221;70%&#8221; max_width=&#8221;70%&#8221; module_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;||13px|||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;21px|||||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smart Grid Nova Scotia Project<\/h3>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;15px&#8221; width=&#8221;70%&#8221; module_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;10px||0px||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;|3px|36px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nspower.ca\/smartgridns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smart Grid Nova Scotia (SGNS)<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>is a pilot project dedicated to discovering innovative ways that customers can share in the benefit of clean energy. With the focus on creating a smarter, cleaner and more resilient grid, the project will help inform future programs and has the opportunity to provide benefits for all Nova Scotians. SGNS is made up of four components testing clean energy technologies and their benefits to NS Power customers. Project components include community solar, residential and commercial batteries, commercial building automation, electric vehicle smart charging, and bi-directional charging.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-3\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.0&#8243;
